James Reynolds

  • I paint pictures that explore the relationship between identity and memory with particular interest in addressing past, personal experiences through the use of self-portraiture or representations of places.

Through my deep interest in processes, I follow strict rules of making and painting in a ritualistic manner that are then negated by the painted surface, as I strive to create work that encourages the viewer to question and wonder, to look and to engage, sometimes uncomfortably.

Using figuration provides the opportunity to explore and create a vision of my own recollections, positive or otherwise, and evaluate them within the context of painting.
