Artist Of The Month For July 2022: Cristian Diez Sanchez
Representing minimal gestures, the abstract compression of material finds its benchmark in Cristian Diez Sanchez鈥檚 sculptural artworks.
Hailing from an architecture background, Cristian was born in Santiago de Chile, where he spent his youth working with copper in a family arts and craft business.
Subsequently, his sensibility in creating three dimensional figures was gradually established. Later, he also worked as an industrial designer, which lasted for three successful decades.
Observing his oeuvre, one realises not only a sheer sense of vivacity but also an attempt in denoting the intricate of living. The variety dwells deeper within the repetitive visual of minimal figurines. In the past, Cristian has also worked as graphic designer and image consultant for various creative firms.
Arte Povera, Brutalism, Minimalism and Rationalism particularly describe Cristian鈥檚 practice. The use of basic material in its fundamental form, the crude approach and a meticulous execution posit a pragmatic style of his practice. Hence, the sculptures are not a product of improvisation but of the planned and mindful observation and execution. Working in cardboard, plywood and eventually in corten steels, Cristian鈥檚 initial experiments led to his established method of expression.
Cristian鈥檚 sculptures are fluid and compact, open yet concealed, expressive yet constrained! While the gestures evoke several diverse narratives, the common form of minimalistic figures highlight the generic-pattern of sustenance. Nevertheless, these expressions attempt in playing the role of protagonist, which allow the audiences to be equally-important part of this artistic process.
